Vastu

Vastu shastra come into existence at the time of Treta yuga the second out of four yugas, or ages of mankind, in the religion of Hinduism. It used to be an art form meant only for the kings and the rich class. They used it to safeguard their kingdom and riches. Intricate policies were devised and followed by him to endow upon him more riches and maintain his stature in the kingdom so people respect and admire him. The downtrodden had no idea of his existence and implications. Sadly, that is true to some extent today as well.

But as time passed the kingdoms were ruined and kings went into hibernation. With the advent of democracy and more stress on education and over-all development people wanted to learn and started practicing new things and vastu shastra was one among them. People from every class were soon inclined towards this art and they started believing in its existence. Transforming itself from an art for the princely it has now emerged as a science that caters to all.

Vastu is an all-enveloping knowledge that helps people to gain prosperity and harmony in their lives by following some simple tips and suggestions in selecting, constructing and arranging their homes, offices, restaurants, hotels and hospitals. For selecting plots of lands, to the construction of their homes, offices, to the arrangement of the furniture and other interior items vastu can suggest constructive changes and ways to bring positivity to their lives and property. It is a wide knowledge that helps curb negativity and infuse positivity giving you a new lease of life. It irons out all the rough edges and helps you go with the flow, helping in a smooth transition from roughly patches time and again.

For its implication in our lives we first need to know what exactly vastu is and what can be its impact on our lives. For instance the meaning of sorrow is either pain or difficulty similarly we can define what vastu means. Here the meaning of vastu is “The facilitation of dependent and peace of mind”. In case of a family vastu helps the inhabitants acquire a life full of prosperity and good luck leading to a life full of joy and happiness. Although people might gain success and fame and reach a point in their life where they can achieve whatever they like their overall happiness depends largely on their peace of mind. Once somebody attains peace of mind he can touch greater heights and open up newer avenues defying all odds and striking a balance between hard work and hard luck.

Wealth provides financial security but it does not guarantee a joyful life which can only be attained by total security. Money increases your urge but it does not have the power to satiate it which leads to frustration and depression. Mental desires are sometimes backed by physical desires which are the root cause of frustration and anonymity in most of the people. A family depends on its breadwinner and gets disturbed if he is disturbed. All things, therefore run with harmony if peace can be attained.

According to our literature "Vastu" means "Vasathi" or "Vaasa" which means living under one roof. This word was later changed to Vastu and in some areas it is also spelled as "Vastu" or "Vaastu" or "Vasthu" or "Vaasthu" as many people do not follow an expert advice and this leads to many versions with a similar meaning resulting in confusions and overlapping of ideas.

There are several rushis out of which Vastu shastra was born. The following are familiar :

  • Manasara Silpa Shastra (by Manasara)
  • Mayamatam (by Maya),
  • Viswakarma Vaastushastra (by Viswakarma),
  • Samarangana Sutradara (by Raja Bhoja),
  • Aparajita Priccha (a dialogue between Viswakarma and his son Aparajita, written by Bhuvanadevacharya)

Treaties such as Agni Purana and some works by Kautilya and Sukracharya are not popular even though they preceded the previously mentioned documents due to some reason or another. There is a wide distinction of style in existence due to each document's place of origin.

Mayamata and Mansara Silpa Shastra are considered Dravidian because their origin is traced to the south of India whereas Viswaskarama Vaastu Shastra is considered Aryan due to its north Indian origin. Out of all the above Viswakarma Vastu shastra is comparatively familiar.

In simple words Vaastu means a system of construction that renders peace, satisfactory life to the residents of that house build according to Vaastu Shastra. Vaastu shastra in fact, is a very old science. Its knowledge enables us to reap benefits of mental peace, health, wealth and make our lives happy. This science, after propounding the rules of construction, goes to prove that by properly constructing our buildings, villages, towns, cities, shops, offices, factories and industries, we can make ourselves prosperous. On the contrary, the residents of such buildings, as are at variance with the rules of this science, several calamities, shortages, diseases and financial insecurity throughout their lives. Our ancient sages created vaastu shastra for the welfare of entire humanity.
